Geotechnical Engineering

Project: Marine Security Operations Centre

Client: Department of National Defence (DND)

Meco was contracted by the Department of National Defence (DND) to perform a geotechnical investigation to assess subsurface soil and rock conditions and to provide recommendations for earthworks and foundation design for a new three story Marine Security Operations Centre.  The proposed structure was located at CFB Halifax, NS.  Recommendations were made for a combined pile and spread footing foundation system based on least cost.

Meco's Services include:

  • Layout and design of the geotechnical investigation.  The program consisted of nine boreholes for assessment of subsurface soils, bedrock and groundwater conditions.  In-situ testing from surface to bedrock and recovery of soil and environmental samples.
  • Acquisition of permits and approvals for proposed work.
  • Supervision of drilling, in-situ testing and sampling of soils and rock.
  • A related environmental sampling program to screen for hydrocarbons, metals, and PCB's at the site.
  • Laboratory analysis for geotechnical and environmental characterization of the site.
  • Preparation of an interpretive geotechnical report for the site including recommendations for a combined deep pile foundation and shallow foundation system.  Related recommendations for site development and parking structures.
  • Preparations of a factual report for site synthesizing laboratory analysis data and implications for site development.
  • Project management of the work.
